 Safe hands in the Algarve
Former England goalkeeper David Seaman will be hosting his seventh Safe Hands Charity Golf Classic at Parque da Floresta resort near Lagos between July 10 and 13.

Bradley Walsh together with other personalities from the world of sport and entertainment will be coming together to play golf and raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK.

The programme includes a two-day golf competition with 22 teams of three players plus one celebrity competing on the Par 71 course at Parque da Floresta.

After the golf there will be plenty of entertainment for those participating with themed evenings on Thursday and Friday. Prizes will be presented on Saturday evening to the winners of the golf competition and after the gala dinner there will be a charity auction.

Each year David Seaman chooses a new charity to support and last year the Safe Hands golf tournament raised over 150, 000 pounds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. In the last six years more than 750,000 pounds has been raised for various charities.

This year numerous celebrites will be coming to the Algarve to support the Safe Hands charity fund. Retired footballers including David Platt and 1966 World Cup winner Martin Peters, Bradley's fellow Coronation Street actor Johnny Briggs, TV presenters Kirsty Gallacher and Ben Shephard, singer Gareth Gates and former international rugby player Kyran Braken will all be present at the event.

The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK raises money in the UK for research into bowel cancer and public awareness of the disease.

David’s own family have been affected by this form of cancer and David said: “We have supported this charity on two previous occasions. This is not only because I have the greatest respect for Bobby Moore but also because my wife Debbie lost her mum to bowel cancer, the same disease from which Bobby tragically died.”

New mums welcome campaign to raise cash for neonatal unit
New mothers have welcomed plans to improve Milton Keynes Hospital's neonatal unit.

Panto star Bradley Walsh with baby Indigo and mum Laurel Triggs at Milton Keynes Hospital's neonatal unitThe unit has remained unchanged since the early 1980s but, with the birth rate in Milton Keynes rising, a major fund-raising campaign is under way to create a bigger, brighter unit with extra cots.

The hospital wants the public to help raise £250,000 for the Little Future Lives Appeal - part of which will be used to demolish walls to create extra space.

Unit manager Glenda Deacon said: "It's been the same since about 1984.

"This is about making the unit more family friendly.

"Many mothers are in here for up to 16 weeks."

The hospital cares for over 300 premature, small or ill babies a year and donations from the appeal will help to buy vital equipment to provide the most sophisticated care.

If a baby is unwell it is rushed from the delivery room to the intensive care area.

As their health improves babies progress to the high dependancy and special care areas, before being allowed home.

Panto star Bradley Walsh visited on Thursday to drop off £1,700 donated by theatre goers over Christmas.

He showed his support for mums like Laurel Triggs and Phillipa Cullen, who have first hand experience of the current facilities.

Phillipa, from Tattenhoe, said: "My son Ethan was born at 26 weeks weighing only one pound 11 ounces.

"He's been through a huge amount but we were very lucky to be able to stay at this hospital, which is only five minutes from where we live.

"I've spent six or seven hours a day here for the last four months.

"What they want to do with this place will be fantastic for the staff, the mums and the babies."

The hospital has agreed to fund four additional cots at £10,000 each as well as seven new nurses and three consultants set to join by September.

Bradley opens the refurbished Milton Keynes Hospital ward
Ward Opening on 4.30pm, 11th December

Bradley Walsh, who is set to star in Aladdin at the Milton Keynes Theatre from 7 December to 20 January, is set to officially open the refurbished, newly decorated and upgraded Ward 8 of Milton Keynes Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which has been redesigned to help fight infections.

Over the past year several building and refurbishment projects have been undertaken at the hospital as part of a major redevelopment. The re-opening of Ward 8, which specialises in the care and treatment of patients with respiratory conditions, marks the beginning of a ward upgrade project and represents a great improvement to patient care.

In implementing the £450,000 upgrade of Ward 8, the Trust made a conscious decision to reduce number of beds from 28 to 25 in order to provide additional toilet and shower facilities for patients. The beds are situated in enclosed bays or side rooms to provide patients with greater privacy and dignity, another key element of the design concept.

Five new side rooms, four with en-suite facilities, support the care of vulnerable patients and can be used as isolation bays to prevent the spread of infections. Bathroom and toilet facilities have been upgraded, and there are now 10 shower rooms on the ward.

Jill Rodney, Chief Executive of Milton Keynes Hospital, said: “We’ve transformed the ward to allow us to provide our patients with the highest standard of care in top quality facilities. The opening of the new ward highlights our commitment and determination to develop modern health facilities for the people of Milton Keynes.

“The new facility is part of a rolling programme to refurbish areas of the hospital and make major improvements to enhance patient care.”

Bob Heavisides, Director of Facilities, said: “The new-look, well-equipped ward provides a fresh, modern environment for patients. The increase in side rooms and shower facilities enables us to provide an even higher level of patient care.”

Lorraine Baker, Matron at Milton Keynes Hospital, added: “This is a very exciting time for respiratory medicine, with the recent appointment of a new Consultant and Advanced Nurse Practitioner. The Ward Manager Gerry Eggleton and her team of nurses are delighted with the new environment, which helps them deliver patient-centred care.”

Bradley Walsh became a household name playing Danny Baldwin in Coronation Street. He is set to feature in a Dickens costume drama alongside Sir Derek Jacobi, which will be screened on ITV this Christmas.
